Virtual Book Clubs

Helpful links for virtual book clubs
Melannie Stewart, a preservice teacher at Spring Hill College
Twitter: @MsMStewart7

Abstract:  This presentation was created to introduce the idea of a virtual book club in your classroom using Google Hangout. Google Hangout is a great way to connect classrooms. Use Google+ Community to join an educators community and then connect with educators willing to collaborate! The collaborative teachers should agree on a novel and a time line. Once this line of communication is opened, you can introduce the idea to your students. Have them brainstorm discussion questions, record a script, and elect class speakers. Pick your book club date and have the students meet and discuss the novel weekly or monthly!

Digital Book Reports Using PowToons

Goodreads as a Classroom Tool

Abstract:  Teachers across America can use GoodReads as a tool to improve reading logs as well as assess reader’s comprehension. Good Reads gives teachers the opportunity to create virtual classrooms, and students the opportunity to create virtual bookshelves for real life books that they have read. Students interact with their peers by comparing books they’ve read to those of their acquaintances. The student adds completed books to their “read” bookshelf, reviews and summarizes the book, and publishes the review in the virtual classroom group for their fellow students and teacher to see.

Abstract:  This is a step-by-step tutorial to creating a Popplet that can be used in your classroom to bridge student learning. This web 2.0 tool is great for engaging your students about literacy and extracting the uniqueness of each student. We discussed one way to connecting a book to thinking maps.
Chris Smith, Preserve Teacher at Tarleton State University
Twitter: @ChrisJSmith01

Abstract: The website PIC
-LITS is a writing inspired site that allows students to pick a picture and practice writing creatively about it. The site has two options when writing but a teacher can be as creative as he/she needs to be. The first option is drag-n-drop, which allows a student to pick from a list of words to create a sentence or two that describes the picture. The second option is free style. A student can pick this option to create a story using his/her own words describing a picture. This is a fun way to engage students in writing.

StoryJumper

Abstract:  Storyjumper.com is a free website that can be a great tool in the classroom. All teachers have to do is create an account and then add in their students to get started. The site allows students to create books online. The site offers a story template where students can add in their own text boxes and images. It can enhance writing lessons in the classroom because the interactive site engages students more in their writing.
