Interactive Learning Games in the Classroom

Abstract: This proposal is focused around Utah Education Network’s many options for interactive learning games.  There are many benefits to games such as these, and they are an important part of my plans for my future classroom.  In my video, I explore three different subject areas, complete with effective learning games for each. I made sure to select games that I would personally choose in my own class, and that are truly useful for learning.  These learning games are an extremely useful way to incorporate technology into our classrooms in a successful way, and can truly enhance they way our students learn.

Using Technology to Enhance Learning Presentations

National Geographic Kids

Abstract: This proposal uses the National Geographic Kids website to enhance learning in the classroom. Each student will get a copy of the dolphin section of the National Geographic Kids magazine to read through with the class. After that, the teacher should put up kids.nationalgeographic.com on the smart board to build on what they just learned. As shown in the tutorial, search for the topic being studied and explore the website! The National Geographic Kids website allows for students to learn in an interactive way. The pictures, videos, games, maps, and fun facts appeal to the children’s senses which better keeps their attention.

Popplet Lite in the Classroom

Abstract:  Popplet Lite is a free application accessible through the iTunes App Store. Popplet Lite allows you to create a graphic organizer in any direction or shape you please. You may display a flow of ideas, sequence of events, or simply brainstorm ideas. Photos may be added to the boxes; once you are finished, you may email your Popplet to a specified email address.  You may use this app across all content areas and manipulate the app to fit your lesson.  Students will stay engaged as they freely create their own organization of thoughts and share their connections with others.

Study Buddies

Abstract: Study Buddies was created around the idea of integrating exceptional learners, English language learners, and struggling learners into the class with typical learners. Through the time spent together doing projects, homework, and class work all students will grow, not only academically, but socially and culturally. Technologically, the growth in these students will be accomplished through Google tools like Google Docs, Google Hangouts, and Google Slides.

Popplet

Abstract: This presentation is demonstrated through screencasting where it covers how to navigate and use the features of the tool, "Popplet".  Popplet is a simple-to-use technology tool that captures and organizes ideas by visually creating graphic organizers; such as, flow charts, word webs, a study method, and note-taking, which is perfect for any student wanting to improve their literacy skills. This tool is appropriate to implement in classrooms because it allows students to showcase their creativity, and is a modern day graphic organizer that is suitable for brainstorming and engages in technology as society advances. The features include adding videos and pictures to boxes instead of a traditional pencil and dull worksheet visual graphic.

QR Codes

Abstract:  In our presentation the viewer learns how to create a QR code that could be used in a classroom setting. We presented our activity on the presentation that focused on word families with the use of QR codes. Viewers can also see an example of how to use an ipad to scan the codes by using a QR reader. The QR codes  are embedded on a worksheet which has pictures above the QR codes. The students in the classroom can scan the QR codes that lead to a video of two students blending the sounds together to create the word.

We Learn Through iEarn!

Abstract:  This presentation is about a fun, interactive website that I recently discovered called iEarn. The site is built of over 140 global networks made up of students and teachers. Teachers work together to facilitate projects that can be a collaboration between two or more classes around the world, while students participate in and share these projects with their class and the world.

ShowMe for Flipping Instruction

Using Fakebook to Enhance Skills

Abstract:  ShowMe is a great technology tool for teachers to implement in order to "flip their classroom" and can be used to show students a particular topic or teach a specific lesson. In addition, an educator can utilize ShowMe to teach any subject and could certainly be used in the literacy curriculum. Therefore, an educator can easily and effectively create an instructional video using ShowMe to their students, parents, colleagues, or for their own personal growth and development.

Abstract:  Many students struggle with using imagery when they read. Research shows that when students use imagery effectively, it can greatly enhance their recall and comprehension of the text. We are using Fakebook as a tool to help students imagine themselves in the shoes of their favorite literary characters, thus enhancing their connection with the text. This tool is free and simple to use in a classroom, and is highly engaging to students. Fakebook offers authentic, formal assessment for teachers, as well.

Chatterpix Merged with the Jigsaw Strategy

Abstract:  Have you ever asked your students to create a presentation for the class and everyone uses PowerPoint? ChatterPix is here to save the day! By using the strategy jigsaw to cover multiple sections in a novel or textbook chapter, you can allow the students to be in control over their own learning and teach the class their section! In the final presenting stage, have the students create one or more ChatterPix videos incorporating characters, settings, or different topics covered in the textbook. Not only are you, the teacher, more engaged but the entire class is too!

Comic Book! In the Classroom

Abstract:  This presentation depicts how to utilize the application ComicBook! as a tool for assessing comprehension in the classroom. ComicBook! provides an engaging platform for students to practice sequencing events or main ideas and synthesizing large amounts of information into a single comic strip. This app can provide teachers with a formative assessment, as well as give students an exciting alternative to traditional literacy activities.

Integrating Tinkercad

Abstract:  Tinkercad is a tool to help introduce 3D modeling into the classroom. When I was learning about 3D modeling, I had trouble grasping the concept. There were not any websites like this out there to help students like me understand what 3D modeling was all about. I am hoping that teachers will take advantage of this site to 1: integrate technology into their classroom, and 2: to help students better understand the concept of 3D modeling.

Instragram and Comprehension

Abstract: This presentation covers how to use Instagram with a comprehension strategy similar to sketch to stretch. Teachers will learn how to teach a comprehension strategy that has students summarize the main points of a story through illustration and description. Teachers can then use these illustrations and descriptions to share a post on Instagram of the students’ work with parents and guardians. The video also covers different features of Instagram, and the benefits of using it in the classroom.

Google Translate for Language Learners

Abstract:  Using the Google translate application a bridge between ELL students and their new curriculum can be made. This application has many features that can be applied to the classroom and the education of students who are not completely familiar with the English language. With the use of this application, students will be able to connect words from multiple languages and create a new understanding of the English words they struggle with.
